I thought I was just making him a bracelet… 🧡
I Thought I Was Just Making Him a Bracelet… 🧡
Most days, what I do is pretty simple.
I sit here in Ireland, choose the rope, cut it to size, fit the stainless-steel pieces, make the bracelet and pack it.
Then I put somebody's name on the parcel and send it away.
Sometimes to another part of Ireland.
Very often across the Atlantic to America.
And most of the time, I'll never meet the person whose wrist that bracelet eventually ends up on.
But every once in a while, someone tells me why they're ordering.
And suddenly, the bracelet in my hands feels different.
This is one of those stories.
It started with an email from Sean.
At the end of April, I received a message from a customer named Sean.
It was short and straight to the point:
“Can you do an orange bracelet for limb loss?”
Then Sean explained why.
He told me he is a right below-knee amputee and that orange is the colour of limb-loss awareness.
He wanted an orange bracelet.
Not because orange happened to match something he was wearing.
Not because it was fashionable.
But because orange meant something to him.
I remember reading his email and thinking there was really only one answer:
Of course I can. 🧡
So we started creating it together.
I showed Sean an idea.
He liked it, but asked me one more question:
Could I make it with a stainless-steel anchor?
Absolutely.
And that's one of the things I love most about making these bracelets.
Someone can come to me with nothing more than an idea, a colour, a memory or a story...
and we can turn it into something they can actually wear.
So I sat down and made Sean's bracelet.
Orange marine rope.
Stainless steel.
An anchor.
If you'd seen it sitting on my workbench, you might simply have seen a bracelet.
But by then, I knew what the orange meant.
And that changed it.
Then it left Ireland.
I packed Sean's bracelet and sent it across the Atlantic.
And eventually, like thousands of other little parcels I've sent over the years, it disappeared from my hands and continued its journey without me.
Until another email arrived.
Sean had received it.
He wrote:
“Just received it today and as usual, I love it. Posting it to my amputee support group now. Thanks!!”
I remember that part.
“Posting it to my amputee support group now.”
That's when this little orange bracelet became something more to me too.
Because something that had been sitting in my hands here in Ireland was now thousands of miles away, on Sean's wrist.
And he wanted to show it to other people who might understand exactly what that orange represented.
That's a strange and wonderful feeling when you're a small maker.
I made the bracelet.
But Sean gave it its meaning.
🧡
Sometimes I forget this.
Running a small business means there are days filled with things that aren't particularly romantic.
Orders.
Emails.
Labels.
Packaging.
Stock.
Tracking numbers.
Website problems.
And yes... occasionally wondering where on earth a parcel has disappeared to. 😄
It's easy to look at a screen and see another order number.
But behind every order number is a person.
Someone might be wearing one of our Irish bracelets because Ireland is home, even though they haven't lived here for decades.
Someone else might wear one because it reminds them of their parents or grandparents.
Someone might choose colours connected to a place they love.
Someone might be remembering a person who isn't here anymore.
And someone like Sean might choose one simple colour because it represents something he has lived through himself.
You never really know what somebody is carrying with them.
Sometimes they'll tell you.
And I'm grateful when they do.
Then, months later, Sean appeared again.
I recently noticed a new verified five-star review on our Trustpilot page.
The title immediately made me smile:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“My newest addiction”
It was Sean.
He wrote about the different Bran Marion bracelets he had collected.
And there among them was the orange bracelet we had made together for limb-loss awareness.
Then he finished his review with:
“Need to come up with something new as I’m addicted. It’s cheaper than the watches I buy!”
That made me laugh. 😂
But after laughing, I sat there thinking about his very first email again.
From:
“Can you do an orange bracelet for limb loss?”
...to all these months later, when Sean is still coming back and adding new bracelets to his collection.
For a huge company, maybe that's simply another returning customer.
For a little family business like ours, it means something very different.
There are countless places Sean could spend his money.
And yet he keeps coming back to us.
That's something I will never take for granted.
Sean, this part is for you.
If you happen to read this:
Thank you.
Thank you for trusting me with your idea.
Thank you for telling me why orange mattered.
Thank you for sharing what I made with your amputee support group.
Thank you for coming back.
And thank you for reminding me of something that's very easy to forget when you're busy running a business:
The smallest things can carry very big stories.
I may have cut the rope.
I may have fitted the anchor.
I may have packed the box and sent it from Ireland.
But the most important part wasn't something I put into that parcel.
You did.
You gave it its story.
You gave it its meaning.
🧡
And to everyone who has ever ordered from us...
I want you to know something too.
I don't see you as an order number.
Your bracelet comes through my hands here in Ireland.
I make it.
I measure it.
I check it.
I pack it.
Then I put your name on it and send it off to wherever in the world you happen to call home.
I might never know why you chose those particular colours.
I might never know who you're giving it to.
I might never know what it reminds you of.
But I know there is a person at the other end of that parcel.
And maybe that's the real reason I've kept doing this all these years.
We're not going to change the world with a bracelet.
But perhaps we can make something small that reminds somebody of their world.
A country.
A family.
A person.
A memory.
A battle they've fought.
A part of themselves they're proud to carry.
Or, sometimes...
just a piece of orange rope with a little stainless-steel anchor. 🧡⚓
Thank you, Sean.
And thank you for allowing our little family business to keep making things that mean something.
One bracelet.
One person.
One story at a time.
Bran ❤️
